Numerous avariables have been evaluated as prognostic factors in gastric cancer, but only a few reliable predictors of patient outcome exist. Recently, TNM factor is accepted and used as the most significant factor in gastric cancer worldwide
whereas
the prognostic value of other factors remains controversial.
To evaluate the variables influencing the prognosis in gastric cancer, 13 variables concerning the prognosis were studied using univariate and multivariate analyses for 156 pateitns who were treated surgically during the 5 years from January,
1984
to
December, 1988 in the Department of Surgery, Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital.
@ES The results were as follows.
@EN 1) Overall 5-year survival rate was 58%, 5-year survival rates according to stages were 93% (TNM-I), 82% (TNM-II), 44% (TNM-III), 16% (TNM-IV) and 5-year survival rate of early gastric cancer was 94%.
2) Univariate analysis for prognosis revelaed that age group, size of tumor, location of tumor, macroscopic type, regional lymph node, lymph node numbers, depth of invasion, distant metastasis, mode of surgery and resection margin wer enoted
significantly. (P-value: <0.05)
3) Multivariate analysis revealed that distant metastasis, margin of resection, depth of invasion and regional lymph node status were more prognostic significance. (Coefficient/Standard Error; > 1.96)
The results of our analyses indicate that distant metastasis, resection margin, depth of invasion and regional lymph node status are important prognostic factors whereas age group, macroscopic type, location of tumor, size of tumor, lymph node
numbers
and type of surgery are useful for prognostic prediction in gastric cancer.
